Trying to get to El Chalten and Fitz Roy

Friday, Mar 21 – Day 95

We left the hostel at 7:15 am for the bus back to El Calafate. Arriving after our 5 ½ hour bus trip, it looks like the town is pretty full of people. Well, it is Friday, so perhaps there’s a little more traffic on the weekend. Guess what? It’s Semana Santa, or Easter weekend and the town is packed. Our first hostel is full, but we were able to find another place around the corner. We want to go on up to El Chalten to see Fitz Roy, but all of the bus seats for tomorrow are full, and so are the hostels. Rental cars are sold out until Monday. So we decided to stay put and use Saturday as a day to plan the rest of our Patagonia experience.

Saturday, Mar 22 – Day 96

This is our first rest day in quite a while. I got up in time for lunch, which was a wonderful smoked salmon served on toast, with nice wedges of fried brie cheese and bitter greens.

Later, Corina, our favorite travel agent, helped us make arrangements for El Chalten, and ciudad Perito Moreno (the site of the Hand Caves I’ll write about later). To finish the evening, we had a huge feast at one of the best restaurants in town. We started with a cheese and olive platter and a great pinot noir. Toss in a huge rib-eye steak, perfectly done, café and apricot panquaques (kind of like a crepe) for desert, and the tab comes to about US$30.00. How beautiful is that?
